Kirsten and Matt's Wedding Day

Wedding season is in full swing and we can’t get enough of seeing your wonderful celebrations. With more than 40 years experience in the highlandwear industry, we have seen every kind of day, from countryside getaways to romantic elopements. Having been based in Glasgow from the very start, there’s a special place in our hearts for city weddings. Matt and Kirsten tied the knot back in April and made sure to stop off at some of Glasgow’s most iconic locations. The newly-weds were generous enough to share their wedding story with us, jump into their day below.

Wedding day in Glasgow

As with all of our grooms, we were curious to know why Matt wanted to wear a kilt on his big day and why he opted for MacGregor and MacDuff. Matt explained, “I’ve got a huge tartan heart and I am immensely proud of being Scottish so there was never any doubt I would wear a kilt! MacGregor and MacDuff were able to provide me with my family tartan (Modern MacKenzie) which was very important to me. Some of the choices available to me made my kilt outfit feel traditional but not old fashioned. For example – I loved my charcoal waistcoat and jacket.”  We couldn’t agree more, our tweed jackets always manage to strike the balance between classic and contemporary.

Providing an authentic kilt shop experience and making our grooms feel like true Kings of Kilts is our goal. We were eager to hear how Matt got on at his Bath Street appointments. Matt said “I felt well looked after by all the staff at MacGregor and MacDuff throughout the whole process. Booking in for our initial consultation meeting was hassle-free and after making our appointment booking online a colleague from the shop called to check in too. When I arrived for my initial fitting the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating – letting me try different fits and offering up their expertise when I wasn’t sure… like helping me put on a kilt on the right way.” Wearing a kilt can be daunting, especially if it’s your first time. Whether you’re visiting us in-store or attending a virtual appointment, our expert stylists are here to make sure you feel confident when getting dressed on your big day.

We always enjoy hearing what traditions couples decide to keep or throw away and wondered if Matt and Kirsten had chosen to keep their outfits a secret from each other. Matt told us “Kirsten was there when I had my initial meeting for my kilt but didn’t get to see the full get-up until the day. I had no idea what Kirsten’s dress would be like – had a suspicion it might be white though.”

Matt and Kirsten tied the knot in the heart of Glasgow and we wanted to know more about how they chose their venue and photo locations. We loved Matt’s response. Matt explained, “A key period in our relationship was when I was staying in a wee flat in Bridgeton and Kirsten would come over on a Friday evening. We would stoat through the Barras & spend the whole weekend out in Glasgow eating, drinking and generally causing nonsense. A lot of that time was spent in West Brewery & on that side of town so it was a special place to us before we got married there. It was really important to us that our wedding didn’t feel stuffy and all our guests felt like they could be themselves and just enjoy their day. Glasgow being the friendliest & best city in the world helped set that vibe!”

These newly-weds added so many personal touches to their big day such as stylish outfit additions like sunglasses and a customised denim jacket for Kirsten. We just had to find out what other unique additions they included. “Kirsten and I met through playing music way back in the day so gigs and music played a big part on the day. Our table names and setting were all our favourite records; the music in our ceremony was covers of our favourite songs that Matt wrote for acoustic guitar; and the playlists that played throughout the day were filled with songs that held memories not just for us but for all our friends & the times we’ve shared together."

"Kirsten and her mum are super crafty so basically everything at the wedding, including the cakes, favours, table settings, banners and pretty much anything else you can think of were made by them! I turned up & just tried not to make an arse of myself…”

With so many highlights to choose from, it wasn't easy to pinpoint a favourite moment but the couple did share this special memory with us, “We both loved slipping away after dinner for a wee half hour just the two of us to wander around the Barras in the golden hour. It gave us a wee breather to really process together what had just happened together. All the obligations of the day (speeches & ceremonies) were done so any pressure was off & we knew we were just heading back to the venue for a massive party with our pals at that point. Plus it made for some awesome photos so that was a bonus!”

Grooms party wearing kilts

Finally, Matt and Kirsten shared some advice with us for future brides and grooms. They had some great ideas and here’s what they had to say, “Have the day that YOU want. It’s easy to get tied up in people pleasing; what’s traditionally done; and worrying what people might think about the choices you make when creating your day. But ultimately there aren’t many days in your life that will be explicitly about you and partner. So lean into the things that you love and reflect you truly as a couple. This thinking meant that Matt ended up at the funfair on the morning of the wedding in his full kilt outfit. Make sure to find a few moments throughout the day to slip away just the two of you! Try and make your rounds and say hello to everyone between courses at dinner. That means you can just enjoy the party later on & not have to leave the dancefloor. (Also, book a great band – the music can make or break the party!)”

A huge thank you to Matt and Kirsten for taking the time to answer our questions and share their brilliant day with us. We wish them the very best for their future together.
