MacGregor and MacDuff are proud to offer a premium tartan design service to our customers. Designing your own tartan allows you to create a personal and meaningful symbol that reflects your heritage, organization, or company identity. It's a way to establish a unique connection to Scottish culture while ensuring that your tartan is bespoke and exclusive.

Working alongside our in-house tartan designer, you will be able to design your own tartan, either for corporate or personal use, which will be officially registered with The Scottish Register of Tartans.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU DESIGN YOUR OWN TARTAN

You will work closely with our in-house tartan designer, and follow these stages to create your own exclusive tartan.

Colours and Mood Board

The process of making your own tartan starts with selecting the colours that will compose your tartan, drawing inspiration from elements such as your logo, brand image, or personal preferences in colour schemes. A mood board will be presented to you, showcasing different colours that relate to what you are looking for. This allows you to explore and choose your desired colour palette, ensuring every shade mirrors the essence you want to capture in your custom tartan design.

Tartan Designs

We will then create tartan examples using computer-aided design (CAD) software. This software creates precise drawings using accurate colours to form the sett pattern of your very own custom tartan. Alongside these digital renderings, you will also receive woollen colour samples, allowing you to physically see and touch the exact colours intended for your tartan to be crafted from. You will review each CAD drawing with our tartan designer, selecting your favourite and making any amendments to the sett pattern or colours used at this time. Once you have decided on the final design, you will be sent a sign-off sheet to complete, confirming that you are happy with the sett pattern and yarn colours before it is woven. This process ensures that your custom tartan fabric meets all your expectations, delivering a unique representation of your personal or corporate identity.

ORDERING AND REGISTRATION OF YOUR TARTAN DESIGN

Our tartan designer will be able to advise you on how much of your custom tartan fabric to order, depending on what you are looking to get made from it. We can provide you with a full list of products available to make in your custom tartan design, all handmade to the highest quality in Scotland. You will choose the name of the tartan, and we will officially register it with The Scottish Register of Tartans. This means that the tartan cannot be sold or woven without your permission, and you will be presented with an official certificate from The Scottish Tartan Register to authenticate your ownership.

DESIGNING A CUSTOM TARTAN WITH MACGREGOR AND MACDUFF

You will work closely with our tartan designer throughout the tartan design process. The timescale varies depending on the complexity of the design and our mill's weaving schedule. We will discuss the timeline during our initial meeting to ensure we can meet your deadlines.

For any custom tartan fabric items made after the initial weaving, please allow additional production time when placing your order. This ensures each piece is handmade to the highest standards in Scotland, reflecting the quality and craftsmanship synonymous with MacGregor and MacDuff.

Where Can I Wear a Kilt?

From the 16th to 18th century, the kilt was worn by Scottish highlanders in everyday life. During this period, kilts were made from a single length of material that was formed into pleats, wrapped around the waist, and secured with a belt.
