How to Clean Your Highlandwear

Our kilts and tartan trews and trousers are made from 100% worsted wool, making them naturally very durable and resistant to dirt. If you do spot a spill or stain, you can use a clean, damp, lint-free cloth to dab it clean. Do not rub the area as this can damage the wool fibres. If your kilt needs a deeper clean, it's best to take it to a professional dry cleaner, ideally someone who has experience working with wool and pleats. When you are attending an event, we recommend taking your kilt out in advance to give it time to breathe. It is a good idea to try it on to ensure it still fits comfortably. If your kilt is a little creased, you can place an ironing cloth over it and set your iron to steam. Place the iron on the area you want to fix, pick it up each time and place it again, rather than moving back and forth like you would with a shirt.

How to Store your Outfit

After your event, make sure your kilt and other items are clean and dry before storing away. If possible, air your kilt for 12 hours after each use to get rid of any moisture hiding in the fibres. Fasten the kilt buckles to help the kilt maintain its shape and avoid any sagging. When storing your tartan trews or trousers, ensure to fold them on the crease to avoid any wrinkles from forming. Store your highlandwear in a well-ventilated space to allow the wool to breathe. Using a Kilt Wardrobe and Kilt Roll is a great way to protect your kilt, trews and jacket and waistcoat all year round. Wool can attract clothes moths, so it's important to store your kilt with natural repellents like fresh cedar blocks or lavender sachets. While chemical mothballs are highly effective at keeping the insects away, they have a strong smell that can cling to your kilt, so they’re not always the best choice for highlandwear storage.

How to travel with your highlandwear

We love to see our tartan travelling and there are a few things you can do to ensure your outfit remains in pristine condition while in transit. If you are travelling by car, it is best to store your outfit in a suit bag, either hanging from the door handle or laying flat across the back seats or boot. If you are going further afield or travelling by plane, we would recommend using a Kilt Roll. Rolling rather than folding your kilt ensures that you avoid creases and keeps the pleats uniform and neat.
