If you're not able to make it into one of our stores or prefer to hire online, here's our guide on how to measure for a hire kilt.
Hiring a kilt outfit has never been easier with MacGregor and MacDuff. We have created a simple guide for you to follow.
Below are the different measurements and package choices you need to provide us with to make sure we send you the perfect outfit.
WAIST MEASUREMENT
When measuring your body, using a tailors tape measure works best as it provides the most accurate measurements. Wrap the tape around your natural waist, which should be around the naval. Make sure this is quite a tight measurement as you don't want the kilt falling down. Your measurement will most likely be bigger than your normal trouser size as the kilt will sit a lot higher. Double check the measurement a couple of times to make sure it is correct.
CHEST MEASUREMENT
Using the same tailors tape measure, stand up straight and wrap it around your chest at the widest part which is often above or at the nipple line. If you are measuring your chest by yourself, make sure you have the end of the tape at your front so you can easily read the measurement in a mirror.
HEIGHT MEASUREMENT
We use your height measurement to gauge how long your kilt will need to be. When taking your height measurement make sure you are barefoot and are standing up straight, looking forward with your legs together.
SHIRT TYPE
Your shirt choice should coincide with your choice of neckwear. A swept collar shirt is best for wearing with a ruche tie and a normal collar shirt is best for wearing with a straight tie.
SHIRT SIZE
Your shirt size is the diameter of your neck. If you already have a dress shirt that you know fits, use that size. When measuring your neck, use the tailor's measuring tape and measure around your neck where the collar would normally sit. This measurement should be given in inches.
SHOE SIZE
Our hire shoes are UK standard sizes and therefore your regular shoe size will be an acceptable measurement.
FLASHES COLOUR
Flashes are worn at the top of the kilt hose and add a touch of colour to your outfit. These flashes can either be in matching tartan or a solid block colour.
SPORRAN CHOICE
A sporran serves as the pocket for your kilt and is worn around the waist. We offer you a few different options of sporran for your hire outfit.
ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE WAIVER
The accidental damage waiver insures your hired outfit from any accidental damage up to the value of £200.

From the 16th to 18th century, the kilt was worn by Scottish highlanders in everyday life. During this period, kilts were made from a single length of material that was formed into pleats, wrapped around the waist, and secured with a belt. This kilt style was known as the feileadh mòr or great kilt and was a full-body garment.
