Tartan met trend as we attended the annual Glasgow Caledonian University Fashion Showcase earlier this month. We were delighted to collaborate once again with the university, this time working with Second Year Fashion Design with Business students as part of their industry live project. The students were asked to use accents of our Mist tartans in a two piece garment with the aim to bring tartan to a new audience. We couldn’t wait to see their designs hit the runway.
From seeing the students initial designs and sketches to watching the final looks grace the catwalk, we were so impressed with their work. The young designers used a variety of inspiration to create their pieces, from album covers and architecture to graffiti and Formula One. Each outfit was as unique as the next, some featuring asymmetric designs and exaggerated silhouettes, while others had a streetwear influence.
Some of the students even took on the challenge of pleating our tartan to recreate the feel of a traditional kilt. Kilt pleating is an art form itself so we couldn’t believe just how professional the final garments were. We continually aim to put a contemporary twist on our highlandwear so we were over the moon to see these modern takes on our tartan, it was our Mist Collection as we’ve never seen it!
This isn’t the last you’ll see of the students’ creations. We’ll be choosing one talented designer to showcase their work in a special window display in our Bath Street store. The winning student will have their name displayed and will work with our Visual Merchandiser to blend their high fashion look with our highlandwear. Choosing just one outfit won’t be easy!
