A Brief History of Clan Moffat

Clan Moffat is a lowland clan with the motto ‘Spero Meliora’ which means ‘I Hope For Better Things’. It’s an ancient clan with records of their presence stretching as far back as the 1200’s which is the same time that William Wallace was said to have lived.

Throughout the medieval period, Clan Moffat were known as fierce defenders of their land. Fighting skirmishes with rival clans as well as larger battles with English forces. This resilience helped the clan form strong allegiances with clan Douglases and the Stewarts which aided their survival throughout Scotland's turbulent political landscape. 

The Moffat tartan features a traditional tartan design based on shades of grey, accented by prominent black checks. With its subtle colouring, the Moffat tartan is an extremely versatile option, not only for kilts but other tartan accessories too.
