A Brief History of Clan MacMillan

The MacMillan clan motto is "Miseris succurrere disco" (I learn to succour the unfortunate). The clan was first established in the 12th century, and was situated in the Lochaber region of the Scottish Highlands.

The MacMillans are among several clans, such as the MacKinnons, the MacQuarries, and the MacPhees, who are descended from Airbertach. This Hebridean prince was part of the old royal house of Moray and, according to one account, the great-grandson of King Macbeth.

Today, there are two monuments dedicated to the MacMillan clan in Scotland. One is a circular tower that was constructed as part of Castle Sween, the oldest stone-built castle in Scotland, by the 12th chief of the clan. The second memorial is a cross located in Kilmory's churchyard. This cross is considered one of Scotland's finest surviving examples of Celtic art and depicts a MacMillan clan chief hunting deer.

There is a great deal of choice when it comes to MacMillan tartans. The Hunting varieties are of a more traditional design or you can opt for something a little more bold and bright with the Dress variety.
