A Brief History Clan MacAulay

The MacAulay clan has its earliest roots in Ardencaple, Dumbartonshire, and their clan motto is "Dulce periculum" which translates to Danger is Sweet.

The history of Clan MacAulay is uniquely complicated, as there are two historical branches of the clan in Scotland, with a third entering Scotland during the reign of Robert the Bruce. One branch traces its lineage back to Aulay, brother of the Earl of Lennox. This branch forged alliances with Clan MacGregor of Glenstrae in 1591.

The other branch of Clan MacAulay is from the Isle of Lewis. Descendants of Aula (Olaf the Black), a thirteenth-century king of the Isles, traditionally held lands centered around Uig. They also share familial ties with the numerous MacAulays of Ross and Sutherland, further enhancing their heritage.

Adding to the complex history of Clan MacAulay are the members of a branch from Ireland. These clansmen were summoned by Robert the Bruce to aid in Scotland's wars against the English. It was through their loyalty and resilience that these MacAulays eventually gained recognition as a formidable clan and their legacy was cemented in Scottish history.

The MacAulay tartan features a green, blue, black, and white design. There are also ancient, hunting, and red variants which are all great choices for a kilt or tartan accessories.
