A Brief History of Clan Lamont
The Lamont clan motto is Ne parcas nec spernas (translation from Latin: "Neither despise nor fear" or "Neither spare nor scorn"). The clan’s territory is Cowal, a rugged peninsula in Argyll and Bute.
The first recorded mention of a Lamont in history was Sir Laumon signing a charter in 1235 granting lands in Cowal to Paisley Abbey in about 1235. The modern name "Lamont" is derived from Laumon, which eventually became what the clan is known as today. Sir Laumon’s descendants, the early chiefs of the clan, were described as "The Great MacLamont of all Cowal" (Scottish Gaelic: Mac Laomain mor Chomhail uile).
The Lamont Clan have a long history of strife with Clan Campbell. Towards the end of the 14th century, Clan Lamont had lost almost all of their initial Cowal territory to the Campbells. Despite extensive intermarriage between the two clans, the relationship between Lamont and Campbell clansmen remained contentious.
The Lamont tartan features green, blue and white predominantly. There is a weathered version that replaces blue for beige.
