Brief History of Clan Kerr

The name Kerr comes from the old Norse term, “kjrr” meaning ‘marsh dweller’. Their motto is ‘Seri Sed Serio’ (‘late, but in earnest’). The name had taken on the forms of Ker and Kerr, as well as Carr and Carre, when their descendants came to Britain from Normandy with William the Conqueror, in the form of two brothers; Ralph and John Ker.

Another interpretation comes from the Gaelic word ‘ciar’, which means ‘dusky’ or ‘left handed’, the latter being an attribute synonymous with the family.

According to folklore, the Kerrs were predominantly left-handed and built spiral staircases in their castles to gain an advantage over right-handed swordsmen. This is where the term "Corrie-fisted" or left-handed originates. However, there is little historical evidence to back up the legend, the narrative most likely originated from the Gaelic "caerr" meaning "left".

A William de Ker is first mentioned in the Ayrshire records in 1205, and his lineage may be followed through several generations. Even though the Kers of Kersland ended their legacy during the sixteenth century, their castle ruins are still visible, solidifying their presence in history.
