Brief History Clan Henderson

The Henderson clan motto is ‘Sola Virtus Nobilitat’ (‘Virtue alone ennobles’). The Henderson name has multiple origins and means ‘son of Henry’ or ‘Hendry’, with the family stemming from the Scottish Borders under the variant of Henryson.

Notable figures include William Henryeson, chamberlain of Lochmaben Castle from 1373 to 1377 and John Henryson, burgess of Edinburgh between 1387 and 1395. The Hendersons were also septs of Clan MacDonald of Glencoe and Clan Gunn in the country's far north.

The Hendersons were known for their large stature. During their period with the MacDonalds, the tradition was that they took on the role of bodyguard for the clan Chief. Standing at six foot seven, ‘Big Henderson of the Chanters’ was the piper and bodyguard of MacIain, the Chief of the MacDonald Clan in Glencoe. Both Henderson and the chief met their demise during the Massacre of Glencoe, under the order of King William of Orange.

The Henderson tartan incorporates dark green and black with hints of blue, white and yellow linework. This tartan is available in ancient, modern and weathered variants.
