A Brief History of Clan Hamilton

The Hamilton Clan Motto is Troimh (Through) and they were a lowland Clan that is said to have descended from Walter fitz Gilbert of Hambledon whose name first appears in a charter to the Monastery of Paisley in the early 1200’s. As a reward for supporting Robert the Bruce, he was granted lands in Lanarkshire and the Lothians which included Cadzow, which would become the town we know today called Hamilton, in South Lanarkshire.

Clan Hamilton has a royal connection that helps them stand out in history. In 1474, James Hamilton, 1st Lord Hamilton, married Princess Mary Stewart, daughter of James III. Their sons then served as regent while Mary Queen of Scots was an infant. The family would later also serve the crown by hiding the Queen after her escape from Loch Leven Castle in 1568. The Clan continued supporting the Scottish crown right through to the end of the Jacobite Uprising.

The Hamilton Clan tartan has two main variations, traditional and red. The modern and ancient versions of the traditional tartan consist of blues, greens and white, with the modern options being slightly darker. The red variant is mostly red and blue with a weather version that is red and green. Both tartans are of classic design and a great choice for any highlandwear outfit.
