A Brief History of Clan Fraser

The clan motto is 'Je Suis Prest', which is old French for 'I am ready'. The clan have held lands in East Lothian, Tweedale, Stirling, Angus, Inverness and Aberdeen.

The name Fraser, and its different spellings, are originally French with the first recording of the name in Scotland coming from over 800 years ago.

Sir Simon Fraser of Neidpath, the founding father of the Lovat Frasers, fought alongside William Wallace and Robert the Bruce in the Scottish Wars of Independence, leading to his execution in 1306. Executioners impaled Simon Fraser’s head on a spike beside William Wallace’s on London Bridge, with Londoners claiming they saw demons rampaging along the parapets, and tormenting Fraser’s remains with hooks.

There are a number of different variations of Fraser tartan with the eye-catching red, green and white Modern version being most popular. The Hunting versions predominantly feature earthy greens and browns for camouflage.
