A Brief History of Clan Drummond

The clan motto is “Gang Warily”. The name Drummond has a linkage with the parish of Drymen in Stirlingshire. The name was allegedly taken from the Gaelic word, ‘dromainn’ (meaning ridge or high ground).

Legend says the first settler in Drymen was a Hungarian nobleman who arrived in 1067 with Edgar the Aetheling to escape William the Conqueror.

The clan’s first chief was Malcolm Beg, Chamberlain of Lennox. Malcolm married the daughter of the Earl of Lennox. After his death, Gilbert de Dromund of Dumbarton and Malcolm de Drummond both swore fealty to Edward I.

Despite this, the clan firmly backed Robert the Bruce and Scottish independence. After the Battle of Bannockburn, the king gifted them land in Perthshire. As the centuries went on, the Drummonds would play important roles in future Scottish affairs.

The Drummond tartan consists of reds and greens, outlined with blue and white. The Drummond of Perth variants add some yellow to the composition. For those wanting a more muted pallet, a grey varient is also available.
