Brief History of Clan Christie

The Christie clan motto is ‘Sic Viresco’, (‘Thus I flourish’) and is a Highland clan from the regions of Fife and Stirlingshire. The name is short for both Christian and possibly Christopher. Clan Christie was historically a sept of clan Farquarson.

It is said that descendants of Christianus, who was one of the first Earls of Lennox, were given the Christie name.

Some sources mention four different Christie families in Fife, Mid-Lothian, Aberdeen and Galloway, each with their own coat of arms. The theory is that the name originated from ‘cruset’, (Danish for ‘cup’). A Christie family of Danish descent were said to have come from the Isle of Man. Records show that the last acknowledged leader of Clan Christie was Sir Archibald Christie, who served as deputy governor of Stirling Castle and passed away in 1847.

The name ‘Christy’ was first recorded as an ancient family, originating in Edinburgh as far back as the early 1100’s, with the coat of arms making an appearance in records between the 12th and 15th centuries. According to ancient manuscripts, the Christy family can trace its origins to the Picts.

The Christie tartan features a vibrant mix of red, green and teal, with yellow, white and black line detailing. The tartan is available in two ancient variants.
