A Brief History of Clan Chisholm
Clan Chisholm’s motto is ‘Feros ferio’, meaning ‘I am fierce with the fierce’. The name Chisholm comes from the Norman word ‘chese’ (‘choose’) and the Saxon, ‘holm’ (‘meadow’).
The family were said to have come to Britain with William the Conqueror, settling in Roxburghshire in the Scottish Borders. Through various marriages they would later acquire lands in the highlands.
Members of the Chisholm clan were amongst the famous seven men of Glen Moriston, who guided Bonnie Prince Charlie after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden. A local farmer, John Chisholm aided the Prince by bringing him food as he lay low in a cave in Fasnaykle Wood.
The Chisholm tartan features a vibrant red combined with green and blue elements, tied together with white linework. This tartan is available in ancient, modern and hunting modern variants.
