A Brief History of Clan Carmichael

The name Carmichael comes from lands in Lanarkshire granted to Sir James Douglas in 1321, which are located in Scotland's Southern Uplands. Their motto is ‘Tout Jour Prest’, meaning ‘Always Ready” and are a sept of the Clan Douglas, Clan MacDougall, Stewart of Appin, and Stewart of Galloway.

Sir John de Carmichael of Meadowflat, one of the clan's prominent figures, fought against Henry V of England alongside the French. It was during the Battle of Beauge in 1421 that Sir John and the Duke of Clarence, Henry V’s brother and commander of the English army, came face to face. Sir John managed to knock the Duke from his horse and break his spear in the process, prompting the English army to retreat. If you look closely at the clan crest, you can spot the shattered lance which commemorates the event.

Another Sir John Carmichael further down the family line, was knighted by his close associate, James VI during the Queen's coronation. He was appointed captain of the King's guard, among many other accolades. Sir John ultimately met his end when he was ambushed while detaining several Armstrongs during one of the several border skirmishes.
