A Brief History of Clan Brodie
The Brodie clan motto is ‘Unite’, with the first recorded chiefs being the Thanes of Brodie and Dyke, in the Morayshire area.
Much of the clan records were lost after Lewis Gordon, 3rd Marquees of Huntly, destroyed Brodie Castle in 1645. This has resulted in some uncertainty surrounding the full history of the clan's origins.
Early mentions of the name were written as Brochy, Brothy, Brothie, Brothu or Brode. The name itself is from the Gaelic word ‘brothaig’ meaning ‘ditch’.
Michael Brodie held the rights of thanage over Brodie by succession from his paternal ancestors, including his father Malcolm of Brodie. This is in accordance with Robert the Bruce's charter of confirmation for the Brodie estates.
There is was evidence that the clan was of Pictish origin, with archaeological evidence of a Pictish symbol stone, discovered near the site of Brodie castle.
The Brodie tartan is of traditional design with Ancient, Modern, Hunting, and Weathered varients available.
