A Brief History of Clan MacNeil
The MacNeil clan motto is “Buaidh No Bas” (To conquer or die). The clan’s territory is in the Hebridean Island of Barra.
The clan claims its lineage from the renowned Irish monarch, King Niall who established himself on Barra in 1049 and is considered the first Chief of the Clan MacNeil.
The MacNeil family expanded to the Isle of Gigha under Torquil MacNeil in 1427, forming another branch. However, after 1493, the two branches took opposite sides in a lengthy feud between the MacDonalds of Islay and the MacLeans of Duart. The Barra MacNeils supported the MacLeans, while the Gigha MacNeils fought alongside the Clan Donald.
The MacNeil tartan is a traditional tartan of green and blue with yellow and black.
