A Brief History of Clan MacLean

The MacLean clan motto is “Virtue Mine Honour” (My Virtues are my Honour). The clan was, and is still to this day based in the West coast of Scotland and the Isles of Mull, Coll, Tiree and Jura.

The founder of the clan was a Scottish warlord named Gillean of the Battle Axe. Gillean fought at the Battle of Largs in 1263 during the Scottish-Norwegian War where the Scottish were victorious.

The jewel in the crown of the MacLean lands is Duart Castle on Mull where the 28th hereditary Chief of the Clan, Sir Laclan MacLean, lives today.

The Hunting tartan of the Clan Maclean is the oldest recorded tartan in Scotland and features green topped with black and white. The weathered version strays away from the traditional green with hues of red.
