A Brief History of Clan MacLachlan

The Clan MacLachlan motto is 'Fortis Et Fidus' meaning 'Strong and Faithful'.

The clan's lineage traces back to Lachlan Mor (known as 'Great Lachlan'), a prominent chieftain who resided along the shores of Loch Fyne in the 13th century. According to legend, Lachlan Mor was a descendant of Anrothan O'Neill, an Irish prince who departed Ireland during the 11th century.

The seventeenth chief of Clan MacLachlan, was a supporter of Bonnie Prince Charlie during the Jacobite Rising of 1745. Tragically, he died while leading the clan at the battle of Culloden in 1746. It is said that after their defeat, a Government ship sailed up Loch Fyne and shelled the old Castle Lachlan.

During the early 19th century, the chiefs of the clan commissioned the construction of a new Castle Lachlan in Strathlachlan on the Cowal Peninsula in Argyll and Bute. To this day, this location remains the official seat of the clan.

There are several MacLachlan tartans to choose from. They predominantly feature a colour palette of red, blue and green.
