A Brief History of Clan MacKay

The clan motto is "Manu forti" (With a strong hand). The clan’s roots are in Moray in the Scottish Highlands.

The name MacKay comes from the Gaelic “Mac Aoidh” meaning Son of Fire. The women were called “Nic Aoidh”, meaning Daughter of Fire.

The first chief of the Clan Mackay, Iye MacKay, was born in about 1210, and was a descendant of Malcolm MacHeth, the first Earl of Ross.

The Mackay clan had a long history of conflict with their neighbours, which was fueled by their size and influence. This animosity lasted for centuries, and ultimately led to their defeat at the hands of the Sutherlands in the nineteenth century, resulting in the loss of their lands.

There are a number of different variations of MacKay tartan all featuring greens, blues and black with the ‘blue’ variety forgoing the green for red.
