A Brief History of Clan Gordon
The Gordon Clan Motto is Bydand (adiding, steadfast). The clan’s first home in Scotland was in the borders, but it was in Aberdeen where they rose to prominence and held a great deal of power during the 16th and 17th century. Since they originated from outside Scotland, they are often referred to as the House of Gordon.
If you have been to a ceilidh, you’ll have likely danced the Gay Gordons, a nickname that the Gordon Highlanders received for being gallant and spirited.
Clan Gordon played an active role during the Wars of Scottish Independence, firstly backing William Wallace before switching to support Robert the Bruce. Sir Adam of Gordon’s loyalty to Bruce’s mission saw the clan rewarded with land at Strathbogie in Aberdeenshire, including Huntly Castle which has become the clan’s ancestral home.
The Clan Gordon tartan is of traditional design and features greens, blacks, blues and a line of bright and bold yellow in the modern and ancient variations. However, there is also a weathered version that trades the greens and blues for more earthy tones whilst keeping the line of yellow.
