A Brief History of Clan Galbraith
The clan motto is "AB OBICE SUAVIOR" which translates from Latin as "gentler because of the obstruction". The Galbraiths historically had land in the Lennox region of Scotland, located in the vicinity of Loch Lomond, to the north of Dumbarton.
The Gaelic roots of the Galbraith surname come from the combination of "gall" (meaning stranger) and "Breathnach" (meaning Briton), together meaning "British foreigner." The name reflects the distinction between the Gaels— who were believed to have migrated to Scotland in the 5th century— and the Welsh-speaking Britons, specifically those from the Kingdom of Strathclyde.
Robert Galbraith of Culcreuch, the 17th chief of Clan Galbraith, brought about the downfall of his clan. He was known for his various misdeeds, including attempting to murder his brother-in-law whom he owed money, as well as abusing his power to incite the Clan Gregor to attack the chief of MacAulay, who had married his widowed mother against his wishes. Ultimately, he was branded a rebel and fled to Ireland before 1642.
The Galbraith tartan is of a traditional green and blue design. Members of the Galbraith clan can also wear MacDonald, Mitchell or Russell tartan.
