A Brief History of Clan Forbes
The Forbes clan motto is “Grace, me guide”.
Located in Aberdeenshire, the Castle Forbes Estate serves as the Chief's seat for the Forbes Clan. In 1815, James Ochoncar, the 17th Lord Forbes, built the current Castle Forbes on the grounds of a previous family residence. Today, it is home to Malcolm, the 23rd Lord Forbes and great-great-great grandson of James Ochoncar. Aside from serving as the Clan Chief, Malcolm holds the distinguished title of Premier Lord of Scotland.
The origins of the Clan Forbes remain shrouded in mystery. Some speculate that the name "Forbes" traces back to the Gaelic word "forba," meaning "field," which refers to the land once inhabited by their ancestors. Others offer a more creative, albeit somewhat inaccurate explanation, suggesting that the name is a shortened version of "For Beast," as the clan founder was said to have slain a ferocious bear.
The Forbes tartan is of traditional design with a colour palette of green, blue, black and white.
