Brief History of Clan Ferguson

Clan Ferguson (or Fergusson), also known as the Sons of Fergus, were found across Scotland. Their motto is “Dulcius ex asperis”, meaning “Sweeter after difficulties”.

Believed to descend from Fergus Mór, a 5th-century king of Dál Riata, the clan established itself in both the Lowlands and Highlands of Scotland, notably in Ayrshire, Dumfriesshire, and Perthshire's district of Atholl. The Fergussons' support for Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Scottish Independence solidified their status and landholdings.

By the 17th and 18th centuries, the Fergussons of Kilkerran in Ayrshire had risen to prominence, with Sir John Fergusson becoming a baronet in 1703. The clan's involvement in the Jacobite uprisings showcased the clans size and divided loyalties, highlighting the complex political landscape of the time.

The Ferguson tartan has a traditional design, feturing blue and green, with lines of red and white. It is a traditional tartan with Modern, Ancient and Weathered variants.
