A Brief History of Clan Elliot

The Clan Elliot motto is ‘Fortiter Et Recte’ meaning ‘Boldly and Rightly’. The Elliot clan are said to have have originated from the Scottish Borders, but it's widely believed that numerous members of the clan adopted their surname from the village of Elliot, located near Forfar.

The origins of the Eliots have always been shrouded in obscurity. This clan emerged as a distinct entity with a chief in the late 15th century, but little is known about their early history. The lack of information is thought to be due to the devastation of their old Stobs castle, which was destroyed in a fire in 1712. As a result, most of the family's documents were lost in the blaze, making it difficult to piece together their past.

The Redheugh Tower, situated close to Newcastleton in Scotland, served as the ancestral home of the clan. In the early 14th century, Robert the Bruce granted the clan Chief a charter to the lands of Redheugh.

There are two main variants of the Elliot tartan. Although they are similar, they still have some slight differences. The modern tartan and the ancient tartan differ in their colour intensity.
