A Brief History of Clan Colquhoun
The Colquhoun clan motto is “Si je puis”, meaning “If I can”. They were a highland clan, with their name derived from the Barony of Colquhoun in Dunbartonshire.
In 1241, during the reign of Alexander II, Humphrey of Kilpatrick was granted the lands of Colquhoun by the Earl of Lennox. The first recorded use of Colquhoun as a surname was by Humphrey’s son, Ingram.
In 1368, Sir Robert Colquhoun acquired Luss in Loch Lomond. From then on the chiefship was known as Colquhoun and Luss.
The Colquhoun tartan is primarily made up of green and blue, lined with red and white. The Modern variant is very similar but uses darker and more vibrant tones.
