A Brief History of Clan Carnegie

The name Carnegie comes from the area surrounding Carmyllie in Angus, and they were a lowland clan with the motto "Dred God".

In 1358, Walter de Maule granted the land and barony of Carnegie to John of Balinhard, becoming John the 1st of Carnegie.

In 1409, parts of Kinnaird were acquired by Duthac of Carnaigie, extending the family influence in this area.

At the battle of Flodden in 1513, John of Kinnaird fought and died. Many years later in 1547, his son Robert, a judge, was taken prisoner during the Battle of Pinkie. Upon his release, he was knighted and became the Scottish ambassador to France in 1556. He was also the first of the family to claim his ancestors were the cupbearers to the Kings of Scotland. This is illustrated in their coat of arms, which bears an ancient cup.

In 1633, Lord Carnegie of Kinnaird became Earl of Southesk. The second Earl James, known as the ‘Black Earl’ for his learning of magic at Padau, was imprisoned by Cromwell for his Royalist beliefs.

Available in both Modern and Ancient variants, the Carnegie tartan has a traditional design and is a great choice for kilts, trews, and tartan accessories.
