A Brief History of Clan Burnett

The name Burnett is a variation of Bunard, which is from the old English name Beornheard (meaning “bear hand” or “brave warrior”). Their motto is “Virescit Vulnere Virtus”, (“Courage Flourishes at a Wound”).

Upon their arrival in Scotland following David I, the family, under the name de Bernard, settled in the south and became the Burnett’s of Barns. Other members of the family traveled to Kincardineshire under the name Burnett’s of Leys.

In thanks for his support for Robert the Bruce, Alexander Burnett was awarded land in the Royal Forest of Drum. Bruce presented Burnett with the “Horn of Leys”, an ivory horn that now resides in Crathes Castle, which is the clan seat.

In 1626, Sir Thomas Burnett was made Baronet of Nova Scotia by Charles I and was a supporter of the Covenant. Burnett’s son, a politician, also served in the last Scottish parliament and was one of the few against the 1707 Act of Union.

The Burnett tartan features a pattern of red, green, yellow, green, and blue stripes. A great choice for a traditional look.
