A Brief History of Scotland’s National Tartan

Scotland’s national tartan is a universal tartan and not connected to a Clan but is instead a tribute or dedication to the whole of Scotland and its colourful heritage.

The tartan was designed by Michael King of Phillip King's kilt-makers in Aberdeen. It was launched in 1993 on St. Andrews day as a homage to the celebrations. The design takes inspiration from Black Watch and Campbell tartans. The blues and blacks are from Black Watch and the Red is from the Campbell tartan.

There is also a variation of Scotland's National which was designed more recently called Black Scottish National. The tartan is much darker and features a range of greys with a flash of purple.
