Not everyone has a family tartan to call their own. For one couple, that became the inspiration to create their own personal design for their wedding day, utilising MacGregor and MacDuff’s bespoke tartan design service.
Creating a Tartan of Their Own
Without a Clan tartan tied to their family name, creating a bespoke design was the ideal way to celebrate their heritage, the Scottish way.
Michael said: “I wanted to create my own tartan as I don’t have a family tartan. Katie (newlywed wife of Michael) thought this would be a nice wedding gift and something I can keep from the wedding.”
Although the initial idea centred around a wedding gift, it was also important to Michael and Katie that they create a tartan that can be used for years to come.
“Hopefully in years to come this tartan can be passed on to the future generations of Finnis’s.”
Discovering Tartan Design at a Wedding Show
The couple had not always planned to design their own tartan, in fact, they did not know it was an option! They visited MacGregor and MacDuff’s stand at the SEC wedding show in Glasgow, where they discovered the tartan design service. After asking a few more questions, they were put in touch with the team to learn more.
“Everyone has been so friendly and helpful throughout the whole process, which made it easy and stress-free.”
Designing a Neutral and Versatile Tartan
When it came to choosing the design and colours, the aim was to create something that would work for the wedding and for all life's events afterwards too.
The couple decided on a design that was neutral rather than bright and busy, making it easier to wear with different outfits on different occasions. It was important the tartan felt special enough for their wedding day, but was also versatile so it could be re-worn.
From Tartan Design to the Wedding Day
Designing a tartan involves more than choosing a few colours. There are lots of details to consider, something that Katie and Michael began to recognise throughout the process.
“I loved the tartan design experience. Through every step, everyone was so friendly and welcoming. I didn’t know there was so much to designing a tartan, and there was a lot of information to take on board, but everyone made the process so easy and fun.”
Once the design was complete, the Finnis tartan featured throughout the wedding day in many different ways, including the kilt, tartan trousers, a tie and bow tie, and Katie even arranged to gift her bridesmaids a tartan scrunchie.
“I was also amazed at how much you can get made from the tartan that you design.”
A Tartan to Wear for Years to Come
The Finnis family tartan wasn’t created to be worn only once. Now that the wedding day is over, there are plenty more occasions to wear it.
“Now that I have my own tartan, I will be using it every opportunity I get!”
And after receiving so many compliments on their big day, we can understand why.
From a wedding gift to a family heirloom, the Finnis tartan has already become a meaningful part of their story.
