We hear a lot about climate change, recycling and sustainability but often these messages unfortunately fall by the wayside due to cost or efficiency demands, but not at MacGregor and MacDuff. We strive to lead by example and make changes wherever possible in order for MacGregor and MacDuff to become a more sustainable business.
It all starts at our stores. In 2019 each of our stores underwent a refit and during this process we focused on reusing and upcycling materials as much as possible. The theme of our stores is inspired by the history and craftsmanship of kiltmaking, which made it easy for us to choose items such as vintage sewing machines and industrial rails to decorate the interior. We are also part of the Nespresso recycling scheme, which may seem small, but when you consider how many customers and staff we offer coffee to, recycling the pods becomes very important. Lights are turned off when possible and when staff take notes during consultations they use pencils to minimise the amount of plastic pens that are thrown away. We are also in the process of moving away from traditional sizing labels to metal button bins that can be reused over and over again.
Across our premises we use canvas bags when we need to send out our hires and reuse them once we receive them back. We use paper bags for items that we sell to customers and reuse all of our suit bags. Part of the reason we created our ex-hire range was to become more sustainable and by doing so, the items in our hire range get to live on as someone's go-to outfit that they will always have ready in their wardrobe.
Even the tartan fabric we use for our kilts has been assessed to determine its sustainability. We are proud to be an official supporter of The Campaign for Wool, a global endeavour to raise awareness amongst consumers about the many benefits offered by the fibre. Our kilts are made from 100% worsted wool and designed to last a lifetime and beyond. The cloth is woven in one of three sustainably conscious different mills, each based in the UK. We pride ourselves on the fact that the majority of our products are authentically made in Scotland.
While each of these listed efforts may seem insignificant on their own, over time and across the industry, these little steps towards a more sustainable future create a massive impact. It all goes back to what we learned as children; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. At MacGregor and Macduff we are proud of the steps we have taken so far but we are by no means done, we will continue to look for new ways to do our part in creating a better future.
