There’s nothing quite like seeing a couple’s big day come to life. We love hearing all about your wedding stories, from planning and preparations to your favourite moments on the day. Newly-weds Pierre and Jean-François were kind enough to share their day with us and what a day it was!
As with all of our grooms, we were curious to find out why both Pierre and Jean-François opted for a kilt outfit on their big day. Pierre explained that “Jean-François Fraser is of Scottish origin from the line of Fraser of Lovat so quite naturally he thought of the kilt as a ceremonial dress for our big event. In respect for his origins, I too opted for this outfit. We found that wearing the kilts made our wedding ceremony original. Even if the choice to wear kilts in Mexico is audacious!!!! It was hot!!!! But everything was indoors, air-conditioned. Haha.” We love the idea that Pierre was so enthusiastic to embrace his new husband’s origins and that the heat didn’t put them off donning their kilts!
While they were married in Mexico, the couple are actually from Canada so we were interested to hear why they chose MacGregor and MacDuff. Pierre said “We did some research on the net, because in Montreal, Quebec, Canada there are not many options for buying kilts. We found MacGregor and MacDuff who seemed to have the most beautiful kilts and formal wear plus they came to Toronto to do the measurements.” Sharing the authentic kilt shop experience around the world is a big part of what we do, so we were delighted to hear that Pierre and Jean-François had such a great experience. Ancient or modern, clan or contemporary, choosing your all-important tartan is a big decision for every groom. Opting for our exclusive Arran Mist tartan and Kings of Scotland tartan, the couple shared with us how they came to their decision. “We ordered samples of Fraser tartan and thus chose our tartans but unfortunately the tartans chosen were not made in time, so Eliss gave us really good advice and sent us photos with other choices. We couldn't have family tartan but we were very happy with the choices we made.” With more than 4,000 tartans available, our tartan samples are a fantastic way to see our options in person and find one that is just right for you.
While we love seeing our couples tying the knot at spectacular venues around Scotland, it was very special to see a wedding featuring our outfits as far afield as Mexico. Pierre told us how the couple chose their venue. He said, “Our first trip was to Cancún, Mexico, so for us it was obvious that the ceremony would be there, regardless of the number of guests. Finally, the majority of our family and friends were present at our side.”
We always look out for ways that couples can add a personal touch to their day and the couple had this to say about their handfasting ceremony. “You have to include it in your ceremony! It is so beautiful, symbolic, traditional and an original element.” Pierre had some advice for other couples including the tradition of handfasting on their day, “For sure they have to practice before the ceremony!” The couple also included the thistle, Scotland’s national flower in their bouquet and wedding cake for an extra Scottish touch.
Finally, we just had to know what the couple’s favourite part of their brilliant wedding day was. Pierre and Jean-François didn’t hesitate to tell us, “The ceremony, for sure, which was very emotional, magnificent and original.”
