With the help of our in-house tartan designer, anyone can create their own tartan. Whether you can’t find the perfect tartan, or if you would like an exclusive design inspired by your family or business, you will be able to create a tartan that is completely unique to you. Your tartan will also be officially registered with the Scottish Tartan Authority and a certificate will be issued.
The process begins by selecting the colours for the tartan. You can choose to take inspiration from existing tartans or from other aspects of your life, like the colours from a favourite photograph or the colours of your business logo. Our tartan designer will then take those colours to create a mood board in which you will be able to visualise the colours together and determine which colours should sit next to each other in the tartan.
Choosing the right colour palette for your kilt can be overwhelming but our tartan designer will be with you throughout the process to advise and assist you in every way possible.
When you have decided on the colours of your tartan, five examples will then be created using computer aided design software (CAD). At this stage your tartan will be brought to life and you will be able to see what your tartan will look like. Samples of the yarns will also be included so you can see the exact colour of each element of your tartan.
Once you have reviewed the CAD drawings and any amendments have been made to the sett pattern or colours, you will select the final design. Once this decision has been made, you will be sent a sign off sheet to confirm that you are happy.
Your tartan is complete at this point and is ready to be made into a wide range of highlandwear products. Speak to our tartan designer about the different options you have when it comes to incorporating your new tartan into an outfit.
A minimum of 10 metres can be woven at any one time , however, we recommend weaving 55 metres as this will allow you to create a full kilt outfit with enough material to spare for any other items you may like.
While your tartan is being woven at the mill, we will take this time to discuss the details of your new tartan. You will need to choose a name for it and make a few notes on what the inspiration behind the tartan is. This will serve as a tartan description during the registration process at the Scottish Tartan Authority. Once registration is complete, a framed certificate will be presented to you. The certificate identifies you as the owner of the tartan and the design cannot be used by anyone else without your permission.
The cost of your cloth will be £120 + VAT per metre and £350 for the design and registration fees. The whole process from design through to manufacture of the cloth takes a minimum of 8 weeks, but this can increase depending on the time you wish to spend on each step of the journey.
