Brief History of Clan Hume

Clan Hume (also referred to as Home) was a powerful clan that controlled the east of the Scottish Borders, in the Berwickshire region. Their motto is ‘True to the End’.

Aldan de Home, a descendant of the Saxon Princes of Northumberland, was the first recorded as having taken on the Home name in 1172.

The 1st Lord Home, Sir Alexander, founded Dunglass Collegiate Church and served as an ambassador to England. His descendant, the 3rd Lord Home, Alexander, led the Scots at Flodden but was later executed for treason against Regent Albany, with his head displayed at Edinburgh’s Tollbooth.

During Mary Queen of Scots’ reign, the 5th Lord Home initially supported the Reformation and later backed Mary’s marriage to Bothwell. However, by the Battle of Langside, he led forces against her and helped imprison her in Lochleven. Accused of treason against James VI in 1573, he was imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle for life. His son, a loyal supporter of James VI, accompanied him in claiming the new Kingdom’s throne and was made Earl of Home in 1605.

During the Jacobite rising of 1715, the 7th Earl supported the Jacobites and was imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle. In contrast, the 8th Earl sided with the government during the 1745 rising, advancing to Lieutenant General and Governor of Gibraltar.

The Hume tartan features a blue and black design, with green and vibrant red linework. The tartan is available in ancient and modern variants.
