Brief History of Clan Hannay

The Clan Hannay was a lowland clan from the Galloway region in the southwest of Scotland. Their motto is “Per Ardua Ad Alta”, meaning “Through difficulties to Heaven”. The original spelling is said to have been “Ahannay”, referencing the Gaelic words “O’Hannaidh”, or “Ap Shenaeigh”. 

The clan's early history is closely linked with the region of Sorbie in Wigtownshire, where they established themselves in the 13th century. The Hannays were known for their battle experience and strategic alliances with other powerful families in the region.

By the 17th century, the Hannays faced significant challenges, including feuds with neighboring clans, which led to the decline of their influence and the loss of many of their lands. Despite these hardships, the clan endured within Scotland and beyond. A notable figure, Patrick Hannay, a poet and soldier, served in the court of King James VI and I, highlighting the clan's enduring legacy.
