A Brief History of Clan Borthwick

The Borthwick Clan motto is Endure Fort (Endure bravely). There are many theories as to how the Borthwick family arrived in Scotland – ranging from Roman Legions to the family originating in Hungary and traveling over to Scotland. The most widely accepted theory is that the family arrived in Scotland in 1067 accompanying Saxon Edgar the Aetheling and his sister, Margaret who married Malcolm Canmore in 1071. Margaret became Queen and then eventually, Saint Margaret.

The Borthwick family rose to a position of power in Scotland. Sir William Borthwick obtained a charter confirming his possession of the lands in Midlothian and the Borders in 1410. The First Lord Borthwick was sent to England with other nobles as substitute hostages for the ransom of James I of Scotland in 1425. He built an impressive fortified dwelling and the castle is still owned to this day by the Borthwick family. The first Lord Borthwick died around 1458 and his tomb is in the old church of Borthwick.

The Borthwick tartan is a unique-looking tartan with pink, green and black making up the composition. The Borthwick tartan is a great choice for anyone who is looking for a traditional tartan that will stand out among the rest.
