A Brief History of the Ayrshire District Tartan
The Ayrshire District tartan was created specifically for individuals from Ayrshire who do not have a family tartan. The Cunninghams and Boyds suggested this design as they did not want their tartans to be used as district tartans.
The colours of the tartan represent various elements of the region: gold for the rising sun, green for the land, brown for the coastline, blue for the sea, and red for the setting sun.
For centuries, district tartans have coexisted with clan and family tartans. Since World War II, district tartans have gained significant interest, leading to an increase in their number both within Scotland and internationally.
