A Brief History of Clan Livingston

The Livingston motto is “Si Je Puis”, meaning “If I Can”. According to Scottish legend, the name came from a Saxon by the name of Leving, who gave his name to land in West Lothian. The locals then adopted Livingston as their family name.

At the Battle of Durham in 1346, Sir William Livingston fought alongside King David II. They were both captured, but Sir William managed to negotiate the release of the King and was rewarded with the barony of Callendar the following year.

The addition of the ‘e’ at the end of the name was introduced in 1641 when Charles I gave James Livingston the lands of Bachuil. He then moved into Achanduin Castle, with his descendants, the Macleay’s, changing their name to Livingstone. The reasons for this are unknown to this day.

The most notable member of the clan was the famous Scottish physician and explorer, David Livingstone. He was the first European to cross Africa, discovering the Zambesi River, Victoria Falls, and central African lakes.

The Livingston tartan has a traditional design that features red and green. This is a fantastic option for those who are looking for a tartan that will pair with a wide range of jackets and accessories.
