A Brief History of Clan Cumming
The Clan Cumming motto is “Courage” and they were also known as Clan Comyn. Clan Cumming was one of the most historically significant clans in Scotland. Their origins trace back to the 12th century, when Richard Comyn, an Anglo-Norman noble, came to Scotland and established the family's presence. Richard Comyn served as Chancellor of Scotland under King David I, a position that helped the family amass significant power and land.
Throughout the 13th century, the Comyns became one of the most influential families in Scotland. Their power peaked with John I Comyn, also known as "Red Comyn," who was a strong contender for the Scottish crown. The Comyns were key players during the Wars of Scottish Independence, aligning themselves with King John Balliol against Robert the Bruce.
A pivotal moment in Clan Cumming history occurred in 1306, when Robert the Bruce killed John III Comyn, the "Red Comyn," in a church in Dumfries. This act drastically altered Scottish politics and led to a fierce feud between the Comyns and Bruce’s supporters. The subsequent defeat of the Comyns at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 marked the decline of their political influence.
The Cumming tartan is available in Modern, Ancient, Weathered, and Hunting Variuents. Predominantly featuring red and green, the Cumming tartan is an excellent choice for matching with a wide range of jackets and accessories.
