A Brief History of Clan Brown
Clan Brown, originally ‘Broun’, was a lowland clan who became prominent in the East Lothian district, during the early 12th century. Their motto is “Floreat majestas”, meaning “Let majesty flourish”.
According to historians, Browns of Celtic origin, got their name after their native judge descendants, known as “brehons”.
In 1128, Sir David Le Brun was present at the laying of the foundations of Holyrood Abbey. He had donated the land where the abbey was built upon.
The Brouns of Coulstoun, the chief family, were descendants of the French royal house and took advantage of any royal favours they were granted. The three gold lilies of France are even emblazoned on the chief's coat of arms. The family also wed into various aristocratic households to grow their influence within Scotland.
The Brown tartan has a traditional design, featuring red and black, making it a fantastic choice if you are looking for a versatile option.
