A Brief History of Clan Blair

The Blair Clan motto is Amo Probos (Love the Virtuous). The Blair name is derived from the Gaelic “Blar” meaning open space or field and as such, it can be found in many place names across Scotland.

The title Barony of Blair was first appointed upon Jean Francois of Normandy by King William I of Scots (1165-1214).  This title would have also granted Jean land – giving the family a high level of influence. It is thought that John Francis de Blair’s grandson, William de Blair married a daughter of King John of England. William’s successor, Bryce de Blair was a supporter of Sir William Wallace but was executed at the Barns of Ayr massacre in 1296. At the Battle of Bannockburn, Sir Bryce’s nephew, Roger de Blair fought alongside Robert the Bruce and his fight earned him a Knighthood from Robert the Bruce. The Blair clan went on to enjoy a high position in the region; cultivating well-aligned marriages until 1732 when the original line of inheritance died with William Blair of Blair.

The Blair tartan is mainly green with a flash of red. The Blair tartan is a great tartan for people looking for a traditional Scottish Clan tartan.
