Can I wear a kilt to the Open at Royal Troon 2024?

The Open is the oldest and most prestigious golf tournament in the world, and this year it returns to Royal Troon. It will be the 152nd time the championship has been held and the 10th time it has been hosted by Royal Troon. Set against the picturesque South Ayrshire coast, Royal Troon is one of Scotland’s finest courses, challenging players with its deep bunkers and often unforgiving weather conditions. For fans lucky enough to travel to Troon this year, the time has come to start thinking about what attire you will need to pack.

Kilt Hire For The Open 2024Can I wear a kilt to The Open?

For those attending some of the hospitality events over the weekend, a kilt might just be the perfect choice. Dressed up with a Prince Charlie, a kilt is as formal as a tuxedo, and when paired with a tartan tie and tweed jacket, you’ll have no issue with places that have a smart dress code. Even if you aren’t going to any of the hospitality, a dressed-down kilt is an excellent choice for spectating on the side of the fairway. Pair your kilt with your favourite Callaway shirt and you’ll capture the essence of Scottish golf in one outfit. A kilt is also a great option for The Open because of how well it can keep you cool and warm, depending on the climate. As we all know, a Scottish summer can see all four seasons in a day, so a kilt will manage these conditions well, keeping you comfortable no matter what the day has in store for you. The best part is, you don’t have to travel with your own. Our Prestwick Kilt Shop is just an 11-minute drive from Royal Troon and we have a range of different kilt outfit options that you can hire in advance or in short notice. So whether you like the idea of wearing a casual kilt while you watch your favourite golfer par the Postage Stamp or you need something a little smarter for a hospitality event, we can help.

Are tartan trousers traditional golf attire?

Tartan and golf go hand-in-hand as some of Scotland's best-known gifts to the world. When people think of golf attire they often think of tartan trews and trousers. While you are unlikely to see the pros wear a pair of worsted wool tartan trousers at Royal Troon, you will see a fair number of spectators wearing them. Much like the kilt, they are great in both warm and cold climates thanks to the properties of wool, making them a great option for The Open. Golf trousers have gone through a myriad of changes over the last few centuries, from knickerbockers to plus-four breeches, but none are quite as recognisable as stylish as a pair of tartan trousers or trews. If you are considering a pair for your trip to Troon this year, once again, our Prestwick store can help. We hold stock of some trews and trousers in various sizes and tartans but if you are looking for something specific, it’s best to get in touch with our team so we can get a pair made for your arrival.

Trews For The OpenHow do I arrange a kilt or pair of tartan trousers?

At MacGregor and MacDuff we can arrange last-minute kilt outfit hires but this is dependent on stock. This means that while we will most likely be able to get you dressed, it may not be in your first choice of tartan or jacket style. That's why we always recommend getting in touch with us as far in advance as possible. This is especially true for our trews and trousers as this stock is much more limited than our hire range. If you are travelling to Scotland for The Open, we would recommend booking a Virtual Appointment with one of our stylists as they will be able to advise you on all of your options for the weekend. Our Virtual Appointments are conducted over a video call, meaning you can get our famous Kings of Kilts experience from the comfort of your own home.
