Florin and Jenna's West End Wedding

Another year of weddings is ramping up and we’re taking a look back at Florin and Jenna’s spectacular day. From initial fittings to final touches, we love hearing about how our couples’ big days came to life. Groom, Florin was kind enough to share his and Jenna’s story with us.

Groom in full highlandwear

As with all our grooms, we wanted to know why Florin chose to wear a kilt on his wedding day and why he chose MacGregor and MacDuff. Florin explained,

“I’m originally from Romania and have lived in Glasgow since 2013 so I thought that wearing a kilt on my wedding day would be a good way to honour the Scottish culture and heritage. Plus, it just looks damn cool! It was easy to choose MacGregor and MacDuff - I had been looking around the kilt shops in Glasgow and to be fair the moment I walked into your shop on Bath Street, I just knew that this is the place from where I’ll be getting my kilt. The quality of materials, the unique styles, the overall customer service, it was really a no-brainer.”

We were delighted to hear that Florin had such a positive experience in our store and with our highlandwear.

Bride and groom wearing kilt

Florin and his groomsmen looked so smart in our Arran Tweed and Arran Mist tartan combination. We wondered what it was about this outfit that made Florin know it was the one for him. He told us,

“After trying a few different kilts it was really a decision to be made between Arran Mist and Harris Mist tartans. In the end because my favourite colour is blue, I had to go with the Arran Mist one.”

Our Arran Mist is a popular choice with grooms as it complements a variety of wedding themes so well.

Grooms party in full kilt outfits

Although Florin wore the same outfit as his wedding party, he still stood out as the groom. Florin explained how he did this,

“Well I thought that I’d have a few different accessories that would be different and unique compared to the rest of the groomsmen; first, I’ve decided that my sporran should be a white one with a chrome finish and the rest shall have a black one. Next, I wanted to have a plaid as well and one of my best men (Ryan) surprised me with a beautiful exclusive mist tartan fly plaid that matched perfectly the kilt. In order to attach the plaid to the jacket I have ordered a Scottish thistle plaid brooch with small blue stones to compliment the colours of the kilt. Also, where all the groomsmen had regular tartan ties I have decided to go for the matching tartan bowtie. Finally, on the morning of the wedding our florist delivered the buttonholes and mine had incorporated thistle and colours of flowers that matched the chromatics of the overall outfit.”

A traditional plaid is one of the best ways to distinguish yourself from your groomsmen, browse our collection here.

Bride and groom in Glasgow

With several groomsmen making up his wedding party, we wanted to know how Florin made sure his best guys were all measured in good time. Florin explained how he kept everyone organised.

“It was a little mission on its own but it  worked out in the end. I’ve ordered 11 kilts in total for my wedding party for people coming to the wedding from Romania, France, England and Australia! Because none of them are living in Glasgow, I’ve created an Excel spreadsheet (being an engineer I kind of had to 😅) and asked everyone to send me a couple of measurements. With lots of help from the team at MacGregor and MacDuff and the self-measuring video tutorial, I managed to double, triple and in some cases quadruple-check these measurements before we placed the final order. I think I’ve had all of this ready for about 3 months before the wedding day. In the end we kind of got lucky too and out of the 11 kilts we only needed 1 of them to be changed before the wedding day which was done swiftly by the team so happy days!”

If you’re unsure when it comes to measurements and wearing your kilt outfit, we have a how-to video for every element! Book a virtual appointment if you would prefer one of our stylists to guide you through the process.

Grooms party wearing kilts

We loved seeing so many iconic spots around Glasgow’s West End in Florin and Jenna’s photos. They shared with us why they chose these locations.

“We live 2 min walk away from Cottiers on Hyndland Avenue and these spots are really just places that we normally see or walk by everyday. We love Harry Potter so The University of Glasgow had to be on the list, we love food and drink so Ashton Lane seemed like a good shout and we even managed to get some photos in front of our house seeing how we live so nearby the venue.”

If you’re tying the knot in the west end, our Dumbarton Road store is the ideal place for picking up and dropping off your outfits.

 Tartan handfasting ceremony

The couple included traditional handfasting ribbons as part of their ceremony and Florin talked us through what other traditions they embraced.

“Yes, for the handfasting we’ve used Jenna’s family tartan and some material brought from the region in Romania where I’m from. We’ve also had a Quaich ceremony for which we’ve used some wine made by my dad in Romania which he kindly brought it over for the wedding. Generally, we’ve tried to have a few Scottish traditional elements which incorporated some fine Romanian details too.”

It sounds like these newlyweds added so many person touches to their day!

 Wedding party

We asked Florin if he had a favourite moment from this wonderful wedding day and we loved his simple answer. He told us,

“Definitely the moment I turned around and saw Jenna walking down the aisle.”

 Tartan kilt and kilt pin

Lastly, we just had to ask if Florin had any advice for future brides and grooms-to-be. He had some great advice.

“Probably quite cliché, but really try and absorb as much as possible of the wedding day. It all feels like a roller coaster ride, it is super fun but goes away super quickly!”
